Move4Nature in Mainz – Hiking Together for Health, Inclusion, and the Environment
In September 2025, ENGSO Youth Young Delegate Saskia Effert led a group of women on a hike through the woods, meadows, and orchards surrounding the city of Mainz. Along the way, participants paused for light exercises and stretching, combining movement, fresh air, and community.
The activity was designed specifically for refugee women, women with migrant backgrounds, and Muslim women in Mainz, who often face greater barriers to accessing sports and health opportunities. Organised in cooperation with the association Arc-en Ciel e.V., which works to promote the sporting and cultural participation of disadvantaged people, the event is part of a broader effort to create inclusive and welcoming spaces for physical activity. In addition to hiking, the initiative regularly offers pilates and fitness classes for women.
The response from participants was enthusiastic. Many expressed their wish to join another Move4Nature walk soon and were already spreading the word to inspire friends and family to take part. Even local foresters whom participants met during the trail welcomed the initiative, impressed by the bags of litter collected during the hike, a small but meaningful contribution to protecting the local environment.
This Move4Nature walk was not only about movement and well-being, but also about community, empowerment, and sustainability. With the positive energy and feedback from participants, who are already looking forward to the next hike — and to bringing even more women’s empowerment along the path.
