Description:
Her Moves is a national initiative launched by Sport Ireland to increase physical activity and movement among teenage girls from the age 13 upwards. The program responds to research findings showing a sharp drop in participation in sport among girls during adolescence. Her Moves aims to make movement more appealing and accessible by creating non-competitive, fun, and socially engaging opportunities for girls.
Participation is encouraged through schools, local sports partnerships, and national sports governing bodies. Events like the Her Moves Festival, educational workshops, and specialized club-based programs (e.g., basketball, gymnastics, dance) are designed with the interests and emotional needs of teenage girls in mind.
The initiative follows 8 guiding principles including fun, social connection, autonomy, and emotional reward, ensuring that activities are inclusive and adapted to young people’s lives. Rather than focusing on elite sport, Her Moves promotes any kind of movement that supports wellbeing and confidence-building.
Her Moves empowers young girls to choose how they want to move, offering them a voice in how programs are shaped. Although the structure is not formalized in boards or elections, youth involvement and feedback loops play a central role in program development.
