ENGSO Youth Represented at Youth Innovating Democracy Conference in Strasbourg
The conference brought together 120 young leaders, activists, youth representatives, civil society actors and institutional representatives from across Europe. It was organised as an important milestone in the consultation process leading towards the New Democratic Pact for Europe, an initiative of the Council of Europe that aims to strengthen democracy and make it more meaningful for all generations, especially young people.
Throughout the event, participants discussed some of the key challenges young people face in Europe today, including limited representation in decision-making, growing inequalities and the need for more inclusive opportunities to participate in public life.
As an ENGSO Youth young delegate, Rodrigo had the honour of delivering a speech to Petra Bayr, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. In his speech, he presented youth proposals for the future of European democracy and highlighted the importance of giving young people a real voice in shaping decisions that affect their lives.
The conference focused on three main themes: rejuvenating politics through stronger youth involvement, delivering on the promise of equality, and empowering communities by supporting youth engagement at local and regional level.
Participants also worked together on ideas for a *Manifesto for a European Democracy in 2049*, the year of the Council of Europe’s centenary. The manifesto will include youth-led proposals and creative ideas to support the New Democratic Pact for Europe.
For ENGSO Youth, Rodrigo’s participation was a valuable opportunity to bring the voice of young people from the sport sector into a wider European conversation about democracy, equality and participation. Sport can play an important role in building communities, creating inclusive spaces and encouraging young people to become active citizens.
