Description:

Junior teams are informal youth groups within sports clubs or associations that offer young people the opportunity to get involved, take on responsibilities, plan projects, and advocate for youth interests. They serve as a low-threshold entry point into voluntary engagement and are often seen as a stepping stone toward more formal roles, such as participation in youth committees or boards.

Unlike official youth committees, junior teams operate on a voluntary and self-organized basis. There are no fixed roles or obligations—young people decide for themselves how and for how long they wish to contribute. This flexible, project-based structure allows them to get involved without taking on heavy responsibilities or long-term commitments, making participation accessible to a wide range of youth.

Junior teams play a vital role in capturing the voices of young people and integrating their perspectives into the development of the club or association. By promoting youth engagement, they contribute to the sustainability and renewal of the organization—recruiting new members, organizing events such as tournaments or festivals, and fostering volunteerism. Education and training opportunities within the junior team also help develop future leaders.

Typically made up of members aged 14 to 27, junior teams follow democratic decision-making processes and operate with a flat hierarchy—often without a formal board. They are supported by a designated mentor or coordinator, who acts as a point of contact and bridge to the club’s leadership. This person, whether employed or volunteering, should have sufficient time and pedagogical skills to support the group, maintain consistent communication, and encourage active participation.

Junior teams empower young people to make a meaningful contribution to their sports community—on their own terms. Through this involvement, they gain valuable experience, develop skills, and build confidence, all while helping to shape the future of their club.
