Council of the EU (Education, Youth, Culture and Sport) met to discuss and approve important matters for Youth and Sport

On the 13 and 14 of May 2023, during the Belgian Presidency, the Council of the EU gathered in its configuration “Education, Youth, Culture and Sport” to discuss, among other topics, social inclusion of young people, Youth and Children’s Rights, the legacy of the European Year of Youth 2022, the follow up to the results of the EU Youth Conference (2-5 March), and the role of volunteers in Sport.

During the Youth session, on the 13 of May, Youth Ministers approved:

 

 

 

 

 

  • Held a debate on the follow-up to the EU Youth Conference, reflecting on how to improve monitoring of and feedback to the outcomes of the EU Youth Dialogue. The public sessions of the EU Youth Ministers meeting can be rewatched here.  

The Council Conclusions on the Legacy of the European Year of Youth 2022 follow-up on the Europan Commission communication on the topic – which you can consult in more detail here – providing political guidance from the EU Member States and calling on the European Commission to ensure its implementation  cooperation with the Member States, within their respective competences.

During the Sport session, on the 14 of May, Sport Ministers approved: 

 

 

 

  • Held a debate on the role of volunteers in European Sport, sharing measures in place at national level to encourage volunteering in the field of sport, as well as the obstacles preventing people from volunteering in sport at national and EU level. The new EU Work Plan for Sport 2024-2027 focus on three main priorities: 

  • integrity and values in sport;
  • the socio-economic and sustainable dimensions of sport;
  • participation in sport and health-enhancing physical activity.

It recognises the role of sport in achieving EU’s overall political priorities, in particular, the goals of other policy areas such as education, health, and youth, and highlights the role of voluntary-based grassroots sport in order to increase participation in sport and health-enhancing physical activity.
